    Transforming a Cold Into a Healing Practice 🌿

    Sometimes life slows us down in unexpected ways. A few sneezes, a scratchy throat, and a whisper of fatigue can become a quiet teacher. In these moments, even a cold can transform into a practice of compassion, patience, and awareness—inviting us to rest, to pace ourselves, and to see every ache as a doorway to deeper connection with our own hearts and all beings.

    I haven’t had a cold in at least fifteen years. Perhaps it came with the change of season, or perhaps it’s simply my body’s way of realigning.

    At first, I felt a little discouraged. But then something shifted. I realized that even this — this full-body cold — could be a teacher. In the spirit of Tibetan Vajrayana, I began a practice that might sound unusual: as long as this virus has taken up residence in my body, I send it compassion.

    May you be enlightened and benefit all beings.

    If this virus must live through me, then may it awaken, may it transform, may it find liberation in the vast field of awareness. Perhaps it can even become an enlightened virus, one that serves the good of all beings.

    This gesture may sound fanciful, but to me it reflects a deeply tantric understanding of transformation — meeting what feels harmful or invasive not with fear or resistance, but with the boundless wish that even this, too, might awaken. It is the essence of lojong: turning adversity into the path of enlightenment.

    To send loving-kindness even to a virus invites an alchemy of consciousness. We recognize that all forms of life and energy, even those that cause suffering, can be included in the mandala of awakening. The simple act of saying, “May you be enlightened, may you benefit all beings,” dissolves separation and opens the field of compassion wider than the body’s borders.

    After such an invocation, I like to rest quietly and imagine the virus as tiny sparks of light, gradually shifting from agitation to luminosity, merging with the radiance of my own heart. This doesn’t deny illness — it reclaims the power of awareness within it.

    A cold can then become a form of prayer, a healing practice, a full-body meditation. In each breath, the body learns softness; in each ache, compassion ripens. Even in fever or fatigue, there can be a whisper of grace.

    And yet, this cold is teaching me something else, something profoundly practical: how to pace myself throughout the day. ME/CFS has always required careful attention to energy, but when I’m feeling better, I tend to push myself—to accomplish, to do, to engage—often beyond what my body can sustain. This full-blown cold is a reminder that true discipline is gentle, that honoring rest is not laziness but wisdom, and that the same careful pacing I practice now in illness is exactly what I need every day to live fully with ME/CFS.

    And so, as I move through these days of rest, tea, and light meals, I remind myself: every illness, every discomfort, every small limitation is also a door. A door that invites patience, kindness, and an intimate awareness of the profound interconnection of all beings.

    There are moments in our journey when words fall silent, and the soul simply longs to rest in the presence of divine companionship. This prayer arose from such a moment—born from the rhythm of ancient devotion, yet carried by the tender breath of Christian faith. It is a prayer of purification and peace, a call to the Holy Spirit who both dwells within and surrounds us with unending grace.

    In the stillness, we remember that the Spirit’s work is not always dramatic; it is often a quiet unfolding, a light that shines through the cracks of our own human fragility. May this prayer be recited slowly, like waves upon the shore—each line an offering, each breath a surrender.

    Come, Holy Spirit, be with us.
    Shine Your light upon our souls.
    Guide our steps, and cleanse our thoughts.
    Purify our hearts and minds.

    A Glimpse of Rigpa: The True Nature of Our Mind

    Yesterday Rinpoche gave me the simple instruction: to keep my thoughts in the room.
    As I practiced, the winds of memory and worry fell quiet, and what remained was a stillness like a pond untouched by breeze. In that moment I glimpsed the unity of ordinary and pristine mind—waves arising, yet nothing but ocean.

    Beloved Rinpoche,

    I write with gratitude for the instruction you gave yesterday, which opened a new door for me into the experience of Rigpa. Your words were simple, yet carried such profound kindness: to keep my thoughts in the room.

    As I sat in meditation, I followed your guidance. Thoughts about the ceiling, the plants, the breath, even the quiet pulse of tinnitus—all of these belonged to the room. They could be held gently within awareness without struggle. But when thoughts drifted toward memories of the past, or worries of the future, or stories beyond this room, I could see them clearly as outside. And so, with care, I let them go and returned to what was here.

    This way of practicing felt so different—so much more tender. Instead of wrestling with ordinary mind, I could simply remain rooted in this space, in this moment. And in that resting, the movements of the mind, the vrittis and pratyayas, began to settle of their own accord. Like a pond no longer stirred by wind, a natural stillness revealed itself. Within that stillness, I began to glimpse what you have pointed to again and again: the open clarity of pure awareness.

    In that glimpse, awareness shone with very little disturbance. An “I” was still present, but the usual fluctuations of thought were momentarily quiet, allowing the stillness of pure awareness to appear directly. To rest, even briefly, in that clarity was both humbling and wondrous.

    I could sense then that ordinary mind and pristine mind are not two separate realities, but two sides of the same coin. The waves of thought arise, yet they are nothing other than ocean. The ordinary shines as the pristine. To realize this in a living way, even if for only a moment, fills me with wonder and gratitude.

    Rinpoche, I bow in thanks for this precious instruction. It has shown me that Rigpa is not distant or hidden, but present in the immediacy of the room, in the simple presence of what is. May I return to this again and again, and may this glimpse ripen into lasting recognition.

    And may whatever merit arises from this glimpse and this practice be dedicated to the benefit of all beings everywhere. May it ease suffering, open hearts, and become a cause for the enlightenment of all sentient beings throughout time and space.

    Letters to Rinpoche: Reflections on Ngöndro

    The following is a personal reflection written during my practice of Dzogchen Ngöndro, shared here as part of my ongoing journey with these teachings.


    I am very new to studuing and learning Orgyen Chowang Rinpoche and his teachings. My first introduction was through reading Our Pristine Mind a few years ago, which proved extremely helpful. The way ordinary mind and mental events are described brought clarity, resolving many years of confusion I had about sems and sems nyid.

    I have been studying and practicing Tibetan Buddhism as a lay practitioner since 1985–1986, after receiving the Kalachakra initiation with His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Bodhgaya, India. At this stage, I am not sure I can yet call myself Rinpoche’s student, as I understand that in the Tibetan tradition there is often a period of mutual discernment, where teacher and student come to know one another. For now, I am simply following his request to practice Ngöndro, and through this I am seeking to cultivate the beginnings of a student–teacher relationship, should that become appropriate.


    Insight from Contemplating the Eight Freedoms

    “The hungry ghost is not merely a being with desire, but a being entirely without contentment.”

    While reflecting on the Ngöndro contemplations, I focused on the second freedom—not born as a hungry ghost.

    As a human, I also experience desire, but I have the capacity for contentment. Even small moments—a quiet breath, the peace of stillness—remind me that not everything is consumed by craving.

    This insight brought me to a thought: perhaps it is not desire itself that causes suffering, but rather the inability to rest in contentment. Contentment softens desire, transforms it, and allows the heart to rest.

    Contemplative pause:
    Take a moment to notice where contentment may already exist in your life, even amid desire or difficulty.

    I am deeply grateful that such insights arise through the Ngöndro practice, and I wanted to record and share this reflection as part of my ongoing journey.


    Updates on Practice and Retreat Plans

    Although I had registered for the five-day Dzogchen retreat in August, I was not aware of the Ngöndro prerequisite and will therefore be withdrawing. I am now following Rinpoche’s guidance by studying and practicing the online Dzogchen Ngöndro program.

    I look forward to seeing him on October 11th at the one-day online Dzogchen retreat.


    Living with My Practice in Daily Life

    I have been living with a chronic illness called myalgic encephalomyelitis for many years. At first it brought great suffering, but over time I have come to see it as a powerful teacher on the path—almost like a spiritual friend.

    Because of this condition I am mostly homebound, and so I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to study and practice with Rinpoche through the modern blessing of online communication.

    Even when our circumstances feel limiting, spiritual connection and insight can arise through patience, presence, and accessible practices.

  • Into the Mystic: Embracing Impermanence, Resting in Awareness

    As I sit here in my yard, under the shade of tall trees and a sky so vast, I am reminded of the gentle teachings of impermanence. The pratyayas, those rising and falling sensations, memories, and thoughts, have once again surfaced, but they do not hold the weight they once did. Instead, there is a soft awareness that everything is already changing, and that in the grand scheme of time, everything is already gone.

    I look over at my RV, which has been a sanctuary for me for so many years. Soon, this land will become something else, transformed into a clubhouse. And yet, in this moment, I am filled with deep appreciation for what has been, for the unconscious and conscious years spent on this blessed earth. The impermanence of it all doesn’t bring sadness, but rather a profound gratitude for having lived through it, both mindfully and unmindfully.

    Namkhai Norbu’s sky-gazing practice teaches us to rest in the awareness of what is, without grasping or rejecting. In these moments of contemplation, I’m reminded that sky-gazing isn’t about observing the physical sky but allowing the mind to open into its own natural spaciousness. The practice reflects what is already within—clear, vast, and untouched by the clouds of thought.

    As pratyayas of impermanence arise, they are met not with resistance but with curiosity. Curiosity has become my companion on this contemplative path, gently guiding me to rest in awareness without the need for answers or conclusions. There is no longer a push for meaning, only the quiet observation of the present moment unfolding, just as it is.

    In this state of being, I can feel both the impermanence of the physical world and the abiding stillness of awareness. It is a paradox, and yet it is also the simplest truth: everything changes, and yet awareness remains the same.

    The teachings of St. John of the Cross, Ramana Maharshi, and Namkhai Norbu all point to this truth in their own ways. We move through life, through our spiritual practices, sometimes seeking, sometimes grasping for deeper experiences. But there comes a moment when we simply stop, when we rest in the spaciousness that has always been there. It is not a state we attain; it is a state we remember.

    As I continue this practice, I feel a deep gratitude, not just for the present moment, but for all that has been and all that will come. And in this gratitude, the pratyayas seem to soften, leaving behind the quiet awareness that is always there, patiently waiting for us to return.

  • Neti Neti #19: Beyond the Desire for Fulfillment and Peace

    Question:

    Paramahansa Yogananda said, ‘Through meditation and devotion, one can experience the presence of God within and lead a life of greater fulfillment and peace.’ At this point in my life, I know these words are true, but the practice of Neti Neti seems even more aligned with my path. It guides me away from distractions, including the desire for fulfillment and peace. These desires, though natural expressions of ego relaxation and pristine mind, can become subtle traps if they turn into goals. How do I reconcile the pursuit of fulfillment and peace with the deeper realization of Neti Neti, which reminds me to let go of even these desires?

    Dear Friend,

    It is a significant realization, this understanding that even the desire for fulfillment and peace can become a subtle trap on the spiritual path. While these states are indeed natural expressions of the relaxation of the ego and the emergence of pristine mind, they must also be met with the same gentle discernment that you apply to all other experiences: Neti, Neti—Not this, not this.

    Desire, in its many forms, has a way of entangling the mind, even when it appears in the guise of something noble or spiritual. The longing for fulfillment, the yearning for peace—these are desires that arise naturally as the ego begins to loosen its grip, as the I-sense starts to dissolve into the vastness of pure awareness. And yet, as you have so wisely recognized, even these desires can become obstacles if they are held too tightly, if they become goals in themselves.

    In this, there is a subtlety that must be navigated with care. The experience of fulfillment and peace is not to be rejected, but neither is it to be grasped. It is to be allowed, to be noticed, and then gently set aside, with the understanding that even these are not the ultimate truth.

    Neti, Neti guides us beyond all that can be named, all that can be desired. It takes us to the very edge of the known, and then, with infinite patience, it takes us further still, into the unknown, into the formless, into the pure awareness that is beyond all seeking. In this place, there is no fulfillment to be attained, no peace to be grasped—because there is no one left to attain or grasp anything. There is only what is, in its simplest, most profound expression.

    This practice is not about rejecting fulfillment or peace, but about seeing them for what they are—temporary states that arise and pass, like clouds in the sky. They are beautiful, they are welcome, but they are not the sky itself. The sky, the vast expanse of pristine mind, remains untouched by the passing of these clouds, just as your true self remains untouched by the ebb and flow of experience.

    In letting go of even the desire for peace and fulfillment, you open yourself to the deeper truth that lies beyond all conditions, beyond all states. You allow yourself to rest in the simple awareness of being, in the silence that is always here, beneath the noise of the mind. This is the ultimate freedom—not the attainment of any particular state, but the realization that you are already that which you seek.

    Neti, Neti—Not this, not this. It is the gentle, persistent reminder that the truth is beyond all concepts, beyond all desires, beyond all states of being. It is the invitation to let go, to surrender, and to rest in the unconditioned awareness that is your true nature.

    Continue with this practice, dear friend, knowing that it is guiding you ever closer to the heart of truth. Let the desires arise and pass as they will, without clinging to them, without rejecting them—simply noticing, and then softly whispering, “Not this, not this.” In this way, you will find a peace that is not sought, a fulfillment that is not attained, but simply is.

    Navigating Pristine Mind: A Journey into Orgyen Chowang’s Teachings on Meditation

    I came upon Orgyen Chowang’s teachings and his book, Our Pristine Mind, like discovering an unexpected window that offers a clearer, quieter view. Chowang, a revered meditation master, speaks about our minds with a simplicity that is both gentle and profound. In his words, I felt an invitation to find not just peace, but a deep, clear stillness—an untouched clarity we each hold within. He calls this the “pristine mind,” a mind unclouded by habitual thoughts and emotions.

    Reading his words, I was struck by the thought: Just as we clean our homes and spaces, how often do we take care of our minds? In this world of constant motion and distraction, it seems almost revolutionary to pause, to clear away what is unneeded. Chowang suggests that mental well-being is like tending a garden, pulling weeds of anger, stress, or anxiety that choke the growth of joy and ease. It reminded me how these “weeds” can cover our true nature, clouding how we experience life and others.

    But what he describes as the “pristine mind” is always there, like a clear sky behind clouds. Our thoughts, emotions, and beliefs pass through like clouds, momentary and shifting, yet we often cling to them, mistaking them for who we are. Chowang encourages us to release this attachment and begin to experience our natural clarity—our inherent, pristine mind.

    In practice, Chowang’s meditation technique is beautifully simple. There are four steps:

    1. Do not follow the past.

    2. Do not anticipate the future.

    3. Remain present in this moment.

    4. And lastly, leave the mind alone.

    When I first tried these steps, I felt a quiet rebellion within—a part of me wants to solve, to plan, to chase. But following his steps brings a profound lightness. As I resist chasing past memories or future anxieties, I notice the mental noise softening. There is no need to control; simply resting in the moment, letting thoughts come and go like wind through an open window, the mind clears on its own.

    With practice, I have glimpsed moments of this “pristine mind”—a state that Chowang says brings unconditional happiness. This is not happiness that depends on outward conditions, but rather a steady presence that finds peace no matter what is happening outside of us. Conditional happiness, reliant on the fleeting promises of the world, becomes less important, as if the yearning subsides in the face of something more whole. Paradoxically, with this inner stillness, I feel able to experience the world more richly, with a fuller heart.

    Chowang speaks of “yoga,” the union of body and mind, which pristine mind meditation makes possible. When my mind settles, the usual tug-of-war within me ceases, bringing calm to my body as well. It is as if my body and mind are finally in harmony, no longer struggling but instead moving together.

    The journey is ongoing. Chowang uses a beautiful analogy: our minds are like a fog globe. When we shake it, the fog swirls, obscuring the clarity inside. But if we simply let it be, leaving it alone, the fog slowly settles, and the clear globe is revealed. With each meditation, I feel as if I am letting that fog settle, trusting that beneath lies a still, clear presence.

    For anyone curious about exploring their own pristine mind, there may be moments of doubt or distraction; our minds naturally gravitate toward patterns, just as they would with any new practice. Yet the gentle return to the present, with patience and kindness, becomes the practice itself. There is no perfect silence, no need to force anything; it is enough simply to come back to this moment and leave the mind to rest in its natural state.

    In this journey, I continue to return to Chowang’s teachings and to practice his four simple steps. I am still learning, but each time I sit, I feel closer to the clear sky within, and it is changing how I live, love, and see the world. I hope, as Chowang teaches, that a pristine mind is possible for each of us, and that by cultivating it, we might each find our way to a steadier, more joyful presence.

    A Bedtime Story for Children Inspired by Tibetan Buddhism and Mindfulness

    Once upon a time, high above the Earth, there was a vast, clear sky. The sky stretched far and wide, so peaceful and bright that everyone who looked up felt warm and safe. The sky never worried; it didn’t change or rush. It simply was—always calm, always clear, like a gentle friend watching over the world.

    One morning, a little cloud appeared, floating softly across the sky. The cloud was light and fluffy, happy to drift along without a care. But as the day went on, the cloud began to wonder. “What if I get too big?” thought the little cloud. “What if I block the sun and make everything dark? What if I become a storm?”

    With each worry, the little cloud grew larger and heavier, its soft edges becoming thick and dark. “Oh no,” thought the cloud, “I’m growing too fast. I don’t want to stay like this!” The more it worried, the more it puffed up, until it was almost ready to burst.

    The sky, watching calmly from behind the cloud, whispered softly, “Why are you so worried?”

    “I’m afraid I’ll never be light and small again,” said the cloud. “What if I get stuck like this forever, covering up the sun and making people sad?”

    The sky smiled, its voice gentle and kind. “Little cloud, you don’t have to worry about staying big or small. Clouds are always changing—they come and go, just like your thoughts and feelings. No matter how big or small you become, I am always here behind you—clear and open, never changing. You don’t need to be afraid.”

    “But what if I can’t change?” asked the cloud. “What if I never go away?”

    The sky shimmered, glowing with a quiet, peaceful light. “Even if you stay a little longer, you are still just passing through, like all clouds do. No matter how big you are, you cannot change the sky. I’m always here behind the clouds, calm and steady, waiting for you to rest.”

    The little cloud listened carefully. It thought about how the sky always stayed the same, no matter how many clouds came and went. Slowly, the cloud stopped worrying and let itself just be—no longer trying to be small, no longer afraid of being big. It realized that, no matter what, it was part of something bigger, something steady and kind.

    As the cloud let go of its worries, it started to shrink back to its soft, fluffy self. It became lighter and lighter, until it gently floated away, disappearing into the vast blue sky.

    The sky remained, bright and clear, just as it had been all along. The little cloud knew, deep inside, that the sky had always been there—and always would be—no matter how many clouds came and went.

    And so, the little cloud drifted off into the distance, feeling peaceful and light, knowing that the sky would always be there to hold it, just like the quiet, calm mind that rests behind all our thoughts and worries.

    As you fall asleep tonight, remember that your mind, like the sky, is always calm and clear behind all your thoughts and feelings. Goodnight, and may your dreams be as peaceful as the clear sky.

    In realizing that “I” will never be enlightened, does this mean that the goal of enlightenment is out of reach? How can I reconcile this understanding with the continued practice of drawing closer to enlightenment, even if it cannot be fully attained by the ego?

    Dear friend,

    Your insight that “I will never be enlightened” is one of the most profound realizations one can encounter on the spiritual path. This understanding marks a turning point, where the journey shifts from the pursuit of a goal to the practice of embodying the qualities that lead one closer to enlightenment—qualities that can be lived and expressed in every moment, even if they cannot be possessed by the “I.”

    Enlightenment, as you now see, is not something that the “I” can achieve, for the “I” is precisely what dissolves in the light of true awakening. The very sense of being a separate self, striving for a state called enlightenment, is itself part of the illusion that enlightenment reveals and transcends. This is not to say that the journey is futile, but rather that the journey transforms into something far more subtle, more profound, and more aligned with the truth of our existence.

    Instead of seeing enlightenment as a distant goal, you have wisely turned your attention to the practice of being as close to enlightenment as possible. This is a practice not of attaining, but of allowing—allowing the mind to quiet, the heart to open, and the “I” to soften. It is a practice of aligning with the qualities that reflect the light of enlightenment: peace, compassion, clarity, and presence.

    In this practice, there is no need for the ego to strive or grasp. Instead, there is a gentle surrender to the truth that is already within you, waiting to be uncovered, like the sun behind the clouds. The more you practice, the more these qualities shine through, guiding your actions, your thoughts, and your interactions with the world.

    There is great freedom in this realization. The pressure to “become enlightened” falls away, leaving behind a sense of ease and acceptance. You are no longer bound by the idea that you must reach some ultimate state; instead, you are free to simply be, to practice embodying the light of enlightenment in whatever way is possible in each moment. This is not a lesser path; it is the path of wisdom, one that honors the truth that enlightenment is not something to be grasped, but something to be lived.

    Your journey now takes on a new quality. It becomes less about reaching a destination and more about how you walk the path. Every step, every breath, every moment of presence becomes an expression of the enlightenment you seek. And in this way, enlightenment is not something that happens in the future, but something that you touch, however briefly, in the here and now.

    Dear friend, this realization is a gift. It invites you to embrace the present moment, to find the divine in the ordinary, and to let go of the need to “achieve” something that, in truth, cannot be achieved by the “I” at all. Instead, you practice being close to enlightenment, knowing that in the very act of practicing, you are already touching the essence of what you seek.

    Trust in this process, and continue to walk this path with a light heart. Know that the practice itself is enough, that the journey is the destination, and that in the softness of the “I,” the light of enlightenment shines ever more clearly.

    Awakening Beyond Illusion: Cultivating Inner Peace in a World of Change

    We live in a world that seems more uncertain by the day. The news flashes across our screens with stories of conflict, rising debt, division, and suffering. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, as if the world is caught in a web of confusion and delusion. Yet, in the midst of this storm, there lies a deeper truth—one that has been whispered through the ages by the sages, prophets, and teachers of many traditions. It is the truth that real peace, real happiness, is not found in the external world but within.

    In many spiritual traditions, we are reminded that the world as we perceive it is often not the true reality. The Hindu concept of Maya refers to the veil of illusion that covers our perception of the Divine truth, the oneness of all life. Similarly, Lila, the cosmic play, teaches that life’s dramas—our joys, sorrows, victories, and struggles—are part of a greater dance, one that we are not meant to be trapped within but to witness with wisdom. Buddha, too, faced the tempter Mara—a personification of our inner desires, fears, and doubts—that seeks to pull us away from enlightenment, keeping us bound to suffering. Yet the Buddha, like so many enlightened beings, realized that Mara was merely a projection of the mind, and by seeing through this, he awakened.

    The universal wisdom here transcends any one faith: it is the perennial truth that the source of happiness, peace, and liberation lies in the ability to see beyond the illusions that bind us. Whether we call it Maya, Mara, or simply the distractions and attachments of daily life, the spiritual journey invites us to look beyond and discover the stillness within—the unchanging truth that unites us all.

    The World as It Appears

    In today’s world, many of us are caught up in the external—political divisions, economic uncertainties, personal struggles. We see two sides, each convinced they are right, each pulling us deeper into the drama of conflict and separation. But as spiritual teachings from every tradition remind us, the divisions are illusions. The real battle is not against “the other,” but within ourselves. It is a battle for our attention, our consciousness.

    We are constantly tempted to believe that happiness lies outside us—perhaps in political victory, material wealth, or the defeat of our perceived enemies. But deep down, we know this isn’t true. Happiness is an inside job. It is cultivated by learning to be the witness, by understanding that we are more than our thoughts, more than our desires. As the Bible says, “The kingdom of God is within you.” And in Advaita Vedanta, the teaching is clear: the Self, the Atman, is one with the Divine, beyond all change, beyond all illusion.

    The Power of Inner Awareness

    In the midst of the world’s uncertainty, we have the power to awaken. It is not about retreating from the world, but about engaging with it from a place of inner peace and wisdom. When we cultivate this awareness, we can see the Lila, the cosmic play, for what it is—a dance of form and movement in which we are participants, yes, but also witnesses. We can act in the world with compassion and love, but without being caught up in the suffering that arises from attachment.

    Each of us has the power to contribute to a ripple effect of global well-being. As more people turn inward to cultivate peace, the world around us begins to shift. This is not a passive withdrawal but an active transformation. Every act of kindness, every moment of mindfulness, contributes to the collective consciousness. Just as the Buddha conquered Mara by seeing through his illusions, we too can see through the illusions that divide us and find our way to unity.

    A Universal Call to Awakening

    The spiritual traditions of the world remind us that our ultimate task is to awaken to the truth of who we are—beings of love, compassion, and infinite potential. Whether we draw inspiration from the Bible, the teachings of the Buddha, the wisdom of Advaita Vedanta, or the compassionate love found in Islam, Judaism, or any faith, the message is the same: we are interconnected, and peace begins within each of us.

    The world may seem overwhelming, but it is in these moments of crisis that we are called to remember our true nature. This is where hope lies—not in external victories, but in the realization that we have the power to choose peace, to choose love, to choose compassion, no matter the circumstances.

    This is the time to cultivate global well-being by nurturing the health of our own hearts and minds. The journey starts within, and it begins with the simple yet profound act of turning our attention inward, learning to witness the dance of life without being swept away by it. In this way, we become beacons of light in a world that desperately needs it.

    Is it true that the I-sense, or ego, will never actually experience the pristine mind, since the I-sense doesn’t exist in that state? And, can spiritual practice bring the ordinary mind and ego closer to mirroring the pristine mind, even if they can never fully experience it directly?

    Dear friend,

    You have touched upon a profound and subtle truth in your reflection—the realization that the “I-sense,” the very sense of being a separate self, will never directly experience the pristine mind, for in the pristine mind, there is no “I” to experience anything at all.

    The “I-sense,” as you have observed, is the part of us that identifies with the individual self—with the body, the mind, the personality. It is the ego, the center of our personal world, through which we navigate the dualities of life—self and other, subject and object, right and wrong. This “I-sense” is deeply embedded in the fabric of our everyday experience, always seeking, always striving to maintain its sense of identity.

    And yet, beyond this “I-sense” lies the pristine mind, a state of pure, unconditioned awareness. In this state, there is no separation, no duality, no “I” that stands apart from the whole. The pristine mind is simply being itself, free from all concepts, all identifications. It is the ground of all existence, the true nature of consciousness that underlies every thought, every sensation, every experience.

    As you so rightly observed, the “I-sense” cannot directly experience the pristine mind because the very presence of an “I” implies duality, and in the pristine mind, there is no duality. The ego, by its very nature, is a construct that stands apart, that defines itself in relation to others. To dissolve into the pristine mind is to let go of this sense of separateness, to merge with the whole in a state of pure being.

    Yet, there is a way in which the ordinary mind, the ego, can approach this state, can come to reflect it as closely as possible. Through spiritual practice, the mind becomes refined, quieted, and purified. Meditation, mantra, mindfulness—all of these practices serve to soften the boundaries of the “I-sense,” to still the constant movement of thought and identification.

    In this stillness, the mind begins to mirror the qualities of the pristine mind—peace, clarity, non-attachment. While the ego may never directly experience the pristine mind, it can come to a place where it reflects this deeper reality, where the sense of separation diminishes, and the boundaries of the self become porous, transparent.

    It is in these moments, dear friend, that you may catch a glimpse of the truth that lies beyond the “I,” a truth that cannot be grasped or held, but only reflected in the clear, quiet mind. Continue with your practice, allowing it to guide you ever closer to this state of reflection, where the ordinary mind becomes a mirror for the pristine mind, and the boundaries of the self dissolve into the whole.
