  • Ten Suggestions for Managing ME/CFS and How You Can Apply Them to Your Daily Life

    This is what I have learned after 30 years of living with chronic fatigue. These ten focus points have helped me. Maybe they will help you, too.

    NOTE: This article contains a lot of information to process, particularly for those of us dealing with chronic fatigue. Take your time reading and absorbing this information, and don’t hesitate to take breaks as needed. To manage a chronic illness like ME/CFS or Long Covid effectively, it’s crucial to respect our reality and prioritize our self-care. Remember, success is measured in many different ways, and taking care of yourself is always a valuable investment in your overall health and well-being.

    Take care and be gentle with yourself.

    1. Pacing: The first suggestion is pacing. It’s essential to balance rest and activity to avoid overexertion and prevent symptom flare-ups. Remember that pacing is not about doing less, but about finding a sustainable balance. Listen to your body, and don’t push yourself into a flare-up. This will take some practice and is likely to change from day to day. So remember… Be careful…. Be mindful…. Discover what works best for you from day to day….
    2. Sleep Hygiene: The second suggestion is sleep hygiene. It’s crucial to establish a regular sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine, and maintain a sleep-conducive environment. Quality sleep can help reduce your symptoms and improve your overall well-being. Again, this is a practice that you can adapt and modify over time. So remember… Be careful…. Be mindful…. Discover what works best for you from day to day….
    3. Stress Management: The third suggestion is stress management. Stress can exacerbate symptoms of ME/CFS, so it’s crucial to find ways to manage it. Consider meditation, deep breathing exercises, or mindfulness practices to help manage symptoms. There is a free meditation class offered online by MBSR. The MBSR online training course is 100% free, created by a fully certified MBSR instructor, and is based on the program founded by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Palouse Mindfulness offers this course. Another suggestion is Toni Bernhard’s book, How to Be Sick. This is a powerful and insightful book that offers a unique perspective on the challenges faced by those of us suffering from chronic illnesses such as ME/CFS, Long Covid, and other similar conditions.     4. Gentle Exercise: The fourth suggestion is gentle exercise. Very, very low-impact exercises like gentle stretching or breathing exercises can help improve physical function and well-being. However, always listen to your body and adjust the level of intensity as necessary so that you are always below your post-exertional malaise threshold. Most graded exercise recommendations do not take this into account, and people often overdo it and exacerbate symptoms. Also, low-impact exercise for us may simply be getting out of bed. Or, if bedbound, turning your head from side to side while lying down. Or, flexing and extending your feet while in bed. If you start by doing less and evaluate your response as you go, you will be less likely to exacerbate your symptoms. I can’t tell you how many times I was enjoying a stretching routine only to have PEM the next day. So remember… Be careful…. Be mindful…. Discover what works best for you from day to day….
    5. Nutrition: The fifth suggestion for optimal health and well-being is to pay close attention to your nutrition. A balanced diet that incorporates a variety of nutrient-dense foods, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, is crucial to maintaining good health. Avoid consuming processed foods that contain high levels of artificial ingredients, unhealthy fats, and added sugars. Opt for fresh, whole foods that provide the essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber your body needs. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and promote optimal bodily function. Remember, a healthy diet is an investment in your long-term health and well-being.
    6. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): The sixth suggestion for managing ME/CFS, Long Covid, or any chronic illness is to consider cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This evidence-based therapy can help you develop effective coping strategies to manage the emotional and psychological impacts of living with a chronic illness. By working with a therapist who specializes in CBT, you can learn to identify and challenge negative thought patterns, develop healthy coping mechanisms, and reduce feelings of stress and anxiety. CBT has been shown to be effective for individuals with chronic illnesses, and it can be a valuable tool in helping you manage your symptoms and improve your overall quality of life. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a qualified therapist to explore this option further.
    7. Support Network: The seventh suggestion is to seek out and maintain a strong support system. Your support system may include family, friends, and support groups. These individuals can provide you with emotional support and help you manage your condition.
    8. Medication Management: The eighth suggestion is medication management. When managing chronic fatigue, medication management is an important component. Work with your healthcare provider to find the most effective medications for your symptoms while discussing possible side effects and interactions. Starting with lower doses than normally suggested may also be recommended. So remember… Be careful…. Be mindful…. Discover what works best for you from day to day….
    9. Symptom Tracking: The ninth suggestion for managing a chronic illness like ME/CFS or Long Covid is to engage in regular symptom tracking. Keeping track of your symptoms can help you better manage your condition. By keeping a symptom diary, you can also better understandy patterns and triggers that may be exacerbating your symptoms. The key here is to do less of what makes you feel worse, and do more of what helps you to feel better.
    10. Education: The tenth and final suggestion is education. Educate yourself about ME/CFS & Long Covid, including symptoms, diagnosis, and management strategies. Becoming informed can help you advocate for yourself and make informed decisions about your health. Remember that education is an ongoing process, and it’s important to stay up-to-date on the latest research and information about your chronic conditions.

    In conclusion, managing chronic fatigue requires a multifaceted approach. By incorporating these ten suggestions into your daily life, you can better manage your condition, improve your quality of life, and find hope for the future.     In these uncertain times, many of us are grappling with complex emotions—fear, frustration, anger, and uncertainty about what lies ahead. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the turmoil around us. Yet, amidst this chaos, practices like Metta and Tonglen can offer profound solace and guidance, helping us connect deeply with ourselves and the world.

    Metta and Tonglen: Cultivating Compassion

    Metta, or loving-kindness meditation, invites us to extend warmth and goodwill to ourselves and others. It teaches us to embrace not only those we love but also those we’re neutral towards and even those with whom we have difficulties. By nurturing this boundless compassion, we forge a deeper connection to all beings, fostering understanding and healing.

    Tonglen, on the other hand, is a practice that transforms our relationship with suffering. By breathing in the world’s pain and breathing out hope, love, and well-being, we engage in a powerful cycle of empathy and transformation. This practice allows us to hold space for the suffering around us while simultaneously cultivating a sense of hope and resilience.

    Ron Kurtz was the originator of the Hakomi Method and a preeminent innovator and influence in mindfulness-based somatic psychotherapy.

    Ron died on January 4, 2011. As the originator, he was the final authority on Hakomi. His teachings and materials, hard drives and videos were widely and freely distributed in order for as many people to have access to Hakomi as possible.     Seven years since his death, five of his trainers have collaborated to produce a new version of his teaching manual, one that retains the vitality and authenticity of his voice but one that also matches the pedagogy and curriculum of the Hakomi Education Network training teams.

    The Hakomi Way: Healing and Consciousness is a compilation of his thoughts, his writings and his talks in one book, his last word on the subject of Hakomi and how he wanted it to be taught and practised after he was gone.

    Our hope is that it keeps Ron’s voice alive in the midst of the learning and that it contributes to his great legacy.

    Ron developed the Hakomi Method in the 1970’s and taught and refined it for over forty years. In 1981, he co-founded the Hakomi Institute and, in the mid 90’s, the Hakomi Education Network.

    Author of Body-Centered Psychotherapy, The Body Reveals, and Grace Unfolding (with Greg Johanson), and a forthcoming book (with Donna Martin) on the Practice of Loving Presence, Ron left numerous papers, essays, training handbooks, as well as decades of video sessions of his brilliant work. He was the recipient of the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award from the United States Association of Body Psychotherapy.

    Hakomi is now taught widely throughout the world, including North and South America, the United Kingdom, Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and Asia.

  • “The Vision Network” – A Journey of Love and Transformation


    Installation One: A Vision of Hope


    Joshua woke up in a cold sweat. The vision he had just seen was fading, but he knew it was the answer to humanity’s woes. “It was so simple, so elegant,” he muttered to himself, trying to cling to the remnants of the dream.

    “I saw a world where love truly ruled,” he whispered to his friend Sarah, “People were joyful, living in harmony. There was no poverty, no sickness. Everyone had access to education and healthcare.”

    Sarah looked at him, intrigued. “That sounds amazing, Joshua. But how do we get there?”

    Joshua shook his head, frustration mounting. “I can’t remember the details. It was right there, in my mind. I felt a profound sense of peace, of unity. It was more than a dream, it was a vision.”

    He closed his eyes, praying silently, “Lord, show me the way. Help me remember this vision of peace and love.” In the stillness, he felt a sense of calm. The words of Jesus echoed in his mind, “I am the light, the way, and the truth.”


    Joshua shook his head, frustration mounting. “I can’t remember the details. It was right there, in my mind. I felt a profound sense of peace, of unity. It was more than a dream, it was a vision.”

    He closed his eyes, praying silently, “Lord, show me the way. Help me remember this vision of peace and love.” In the stillness, he felt a sense of calm. The words of Jesus echoed in his mind, “I am the light, the way, and the truth.”

    Sarah placed a hand on his shoulder. “Maybe the vision will come back to you. We should start by spreading the message of love and compassion. That’s something we can do right now.”

    Joshua nodded, feeling a flicker of hope. “Yes, you’re right. We can start small. We can help our community, show kindness to those in need. Maybe, as we do, the vision will become clearer.”

    The next morning, Joshua and Sarah set out into their neighborhood. They organized a food drive for the homeless, offered support to the elderly, and created a community garden where everyone could contribute and benefit. As they worked, John felt a deep sense of fulfillment.

    Weeks turned into months, and their small acts of kindness began to ripple outwards. More people joined their efforts, and the community started to transform. There was a renewed sense of unity and purpose.

    One evening, as Joshua was tending to the garden, he felt a sudden clarity. The vision returned, more vivid than ever. He saw not just their community, but cities and nations embracing the same principles of love, compassion, and service.

    “Sarah!” he called out, excitement bubbling in his voice. “I remember! The vision… it’s all about living these values on a global scale. If we can inspire others, we can change the world.”

    Sarah smiled, her eyes shining with hope. “Then let’s keep going, Joshua. One step at a time, we can make this vision a reality.”

    As they continued their work, they knew that the journey ahead would be long and challenging. But they also knew that with love as their guide, anything was possible. And so, they walked forward, hand in hand, ready to light the way.


    As Joshua and Sarah’s community initiatives grew, so did their influence. People from neighboring towns heard about the transformation and came to see for themselves. They witnessed a place where love and compassion were not just words but actions, where everyone had a role and everyone was valued.

    One day, a young journalist named Emily visited the community. She had heard rumors of this extraordinary place and wanted to write an article about it. Emily approached Joshua as he was helping a group of children plant new seedlings in the community garden.

    “Excuse me,” she said, “I’m Emily from the Times. I’ve been hearing incredible things about what you’re doing here, and I’d love to know more. How did all of this start?”

    Joshua smiled, wiping the dirt from his hands. “It started with a vision, Emily. A vision of a world where love and compassion guide our actions. We began with small acts of kindness, and it just grew from there.”

    Emily was intrigued. “And what do you hope to achieve with this vision?”
