    Reflections on the Spirit and the Word

    As we move through the sacred rhythms of the calendar, a deep and often overlooked harmony begins to reveal itself between the Jewish and Christian traditions. One such harmony lives in the connection between Shavuot and Pentecost—two feasts separated by language and culture, but united by spirit and meaning.

    In the Jewish tradition, Shavuot (meaning “Weeks”) arrives seven weeks after Passover. It commemorates the moment when Moses ascended Mount Sinai and received the Torah—not only the Ten Commandments, but the full revelation of God’s will for the people of Israel. Shavuot is a festival of divine giving. It is a time when the heavens opened and the Word came down—not only as law, but as relationship, as covenant.

    In mystical Judaism, Shavuot is sometimes described as a wedding between God and Israel, with the Torah as the marriage contract. The people stood at Sinai not just as witnesses to revelation, but as participants in a sacred union. The voice of God thundered from the mountain. The people trembled. Something eternal was given.

    Now consider Pentecost, celebrated 50 days after Easter in the Christian tradition. The name “Pentecost” comes from the Greek pentēkostē, meaning “fiftieth.” On this day, as the disciples of Jesus gathered in Jerusalem, a great wind filled the room, tongues of fire rested on each of them, and they were filled with the Holy Spirit (Acts 2). They began to speak in many languages, and their words carried a new power.

    For Christians, Pentecost marks the birth of the Church, not through doctrine, but through direct experience of the Spirit. The gift was not written on tablets, but on hearts. The Divine presence did not descend in smoke and thunder, but in wind and flame.

    And yet—these two events, Sinai and Pentecost, are deeply connected.

    At Sinai, God gave the Torah.

    In Jerusalem, God gave the Spirit.

    At Sinai, God’s voice was heard in thunder.

    In Jerusalem, the Spirit moved through wind and flame.

    At Sinai, a people was formed around the Word.

    In Jerusalem, a people was formed around the Spirit.

    In both traditions, something sacred is given. Something life-altering.

    God gives God’s Self—first through revelation, and then through indwelling presence.

    For those of us who walk between these worlds—or seek to honor both—the connection between Shavuot and Pentecost is not accidental. It is a reminder that revelation is not a one-time event, but a living process. God continues to give. Through law and through love. Through instruction and inspiration. First on stone, then in spirit—but always for the sake of healing, wholeness, and transformation.

    May this season remind us that whether we gather at the foot of Sinai or in an upper room, the Breath of the Holy still moves among us.

    A Refuge That’s Never Truly Out of Reach

    For those of us living with chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), finding peace can often feel like an elusive dream. The body aches, the mind fogs, and even the simple act of resting can feel like a challenge.

    But beneath the surface of our struggles—beneath the exhaustion, frustration, and the endless cycle of unfinished stories—there is a refuge that has never left us. A place within that remains untouched, waiting patiently to be noticed.

    Across traditions, this inner sanctuary is described in many ways. In Christianity, it is the peace that passeth understanding, the quiet presence of the Holy Spirit that calms the heart. In Buddhism, it is our Buddha nature, the still, pristine mind that shines beneath our thoughts. In Jewish practice, Shabbat offers a sacred pause from the world’s demands, a time to rest in the presence of the I AM. Whether through Vipassana’s gentle observation, Samatha’s calming focus, or the surrender of “Let go and let God,” the invitation is the same: to rest in the peace that is always there, even if just for a moment.

    But here’s the truth that many of us don’t expect—when we set the intention to relax, to find that peace, it’s common for our minds to do the exact opposite. The very moment we try to slow down, all the unsettled thoughts, worries, and frustrations rise to the surface. It’s like sitting down to meditate and suddenly realizing just how noisy the mind really is. For those of us with ME/CFS, this can feel especially overwhelming. Our bodies are already weighed down by fatigue, and now our minds seem unwilling to give us the rest we crave.

    But this isn’t a sign of failure—it’s part of the process. Just as clouds drift across the sky without altering the vastness behind them, our thoughts come and go without touching the deeper peace within us. The key is not to fight these thoughts, not to grow frustrated or discouraged, but to witness them with gentle curiosity. To let them rise and fall, trusting that underneath the noise, the stillness remains.

    This practice takes more than just patience—it requires self-compassion. We have to be kind to ourselves, especially when the mind feels restless or when peace feels far away. Forgiveness becomes a part of the journey: forgiving ourselves for not feeling better, for being frustrated, for wishing things were different. And most of all, it requires surrender. To let go of the need to control how or when peace arrives, and to trust that it will reveal itself in its own time.

    Over the past month, I’ve faced one challenge after another—the sale of my RV, packing up a home that had been my refuge for over 30 years, and the physical demands of moving into a new apartment. Each step of the process required me to push beyond my body’s natural limits, triggering post-exertional malaise. There were moments I had to override the signals of fatigue just to get through the next task, knowing full well the cost it would bring later. And yet, I approached it as mindfully as I could, listening when possible, resting when needed, and trusting that I would eventually return to the gentle rhythm of proper pacing.

    Now, as I settle into this new space, I look forward to reclaiming that mindful practice of pacing—of finding the balance between effort and rest, between doing and simply being. Even though my body is still recovering, I know that the peace I’m seeking is not dependent on my circumstances. It’s always there, beneath the surface, waiting for me to slow down, to breathe, and to notice.

    And so, I offer this to you—whether you live with ME/CFS, face chronic challenges, or are simply navigating the complexities of life. The path to peace isn’t always smooth, and the mind may resist at first. But beneath the noise, the frustration, and the exhaustion, there is a refuge that has never left you. It’s not something you have to create or chase—it’s already there, waiting to be noticed.

    Let go. Be kind to yourself. Trust the process.

    And when you least expect it, that peace—the one that passeth understanding, that shines with the light of your Buddha nature, that whispers with the breath of the Holy Spirit—will rise to meet you.

    Because the truth is, that refuge is never truly out of reach.

He dreamed of being somewhere else, somewhere where he could feel love, and he wondered if such a place even existed. Sometimes, in the early hours of morning, he would imagine angels nearby, their gentle presence filling his heart with a quiet peace that seemed to whisper, “Keep going, Dicky.”

    As the years passed, Dicky grew older and became known as Richard. Though his life had its difficult moments, he’d come to believe that there was goodness in the world, even if he hadn’t fully found it yet. Richard read books about great teachers who had lived many years before, and one day, he found a book that spoke about how God lived within him, like a quiet candle always shining in his heart. This idea made him smile. “If God is here with me, maybe I can find peace, even in my solitude,” he thought.

    Leave Your Mind Alone

Leaving your mind alone means not meddling with your thoughts as they arise. It’s about observing them without judgment and letting them pass without attachment.

Taking time each day to let go of our busy, distracted minds to rest in the Holy Spirit allows us to connect with divine guidance and comfort.

    Similarly, the story of young Samuel from 1 Samuel 3:1-10 beautifully illustrates the process of becoming attuned to the divine voice. Mistaking the Lord’s call for Eli’s voice, Samuel’s repeated response, “Here I am,” eventually aligns with divine communication when he says, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” This moment of realization exemplifies the importance of being truly present, ready to receive spiritual guidance.

    The Jewish Tradition of Hineni
