    Recognizing the Vrittis:

    • I am not my thoughts: Many thoughts and memories arise and disappear. I am not my thoughts. I am not my memories. Thoughts and memories are vrittis—fluctuations that come and go in the mind. I am the witness. I am the Atman.
    • I am not my emotions or feelings: Emotions and feelings, like thoughts and memories, are transient. They arise, linger for a while, and then fade away. By recognizing “I am not my emotions” and “I am not my feelings,” I affirm that these, too, are fluctuations in the mind. I am the witness. I am the Atman.
    • I am not my desires and aversions: Desires and aversions also fluctuate in the mind. They arise from conditioned patterns and pass away, often leading to attachment or avoidance. By asking this, you open yourself to a spontaneous and deeper experience of your true nature.

    Step 2: Begin Self-Inquiry

    • Ask yourself, “Who am I?” or “What is this ‘I’ that I experience?”
    • Allow any mental events, fluctuations, experiences, thoughts, feelings, sensations, memories, or beliefs to arise without judgment. Simply observe them.

    Atoms as Atman: The Fundamental Building Blocks

    At the most basic level, everything in the physical universe is composed of atoms. These tiny, indivisible units combine in various ways to form all matter—from the simplest elements to the most complex structures. Similarly, in Advaita Vedanta, Atman is the fundamental reality that underlies all existence. Atman, or pure consciousness, is the singular essence from which the diversity of life and the universe arises.

    Upadhis as Programs: Creating Complex Outcomes

    The diversity and complexity we experience are like the different functions of a computer: they are real in their context, but they don’t change the fundamental nature of the atoms (or Atman) that make them possible. This is the essence of the illusion of plurality. It’s not that the diversity isn’t there—it’s that the diversity is an expression of something deeper and singular.

    Ron Kurtz was the originator of the Hakomi Method and a preeminent innovator and influence in mindfulness-based somatic psychotherapy.

    Ron died on January 4, 2011. As the originator, he was the final authority on Hakomi. His teachings and materials, hard drives and videos were widely and freely distributed in order for as many people to have access to Hakomi as possible.     Seven years since his death, five of his trainers have collaborated to produce a new version of his teaching manual, one that retains the vitality and authenticity of his voice but one that also matches the pedagogy and curriculum of the Hakomi Education Network training teams.

    The Hakomi Way: Healing and Consciousness is a compilation of his thoughts, his writings and his talks in one book, his last word on the subject of Hakomi and how he wanted it to be taught and practised after he was gone.

    Our hope is that it keeps Ron’s voice alive in the midst of the learning and that it contributes to his great legacy.

    Ron developed the Hakomi Method in the 1970’s and taught and refined it for over forty years. In 1981, he co-founded the Hakomi Institute and, in the mid 90’s, the Hakomi Education Network.

    Author of Body-Centered Psychotherapy, The Body Reveals, and Grace Unfolding (with Greg Johanson), and a forthcoming book (with Donna Martin) on the Practice of Loving Presence, Ron left numerous papers, essays, training handbooks, as well as decades of video sessions of his brilliant work. He was the recipient of the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award from the United States Association of Body Psychotherapy.
