    To many, the word Buddhism may conjure images of statues or rituals that seem foreign or difficult to understand, particularly for those from a conservative Christian background. However, at its heart, Buddhism is not about worshiping an idol or a false god, as some might mistakenly believe. Rather, it is a path of inner transformation that shares many core values with Christianity—values like compassion, ethical living, and the sincere effort to become a better person.

    In Buddhism, practitioners turn to the Three Jewels: the Buddha, who represents the potential for awakening within all of us; the Dharma, the teachings that show the way to live with love, wisdom, and peace; and the Sangha, the community of practitioners who support one another in their spiritual journey. In this sense, the Buddha is not a deity to be worshiped but a teacher, much like how Christians might revere the wisdom of Jesus Christ. The focus is not on idol worship, but on following a path that leads to moral and spiritual growth.

    At first glance, the colorful rituals, sacred music, and intricate costumes may seem confusing or overwhelming. Yet these outward forms are simply expressions of an inner practice that remains deeply practical and profound: the training of the mind. Tibetan Buddhism is not a religion in the conventional sense of belief or dogma but rather a transformative path aimed at purifying the mind. Through meditation, visualization, mantra, and ritual, the practice cultivates clarity, compassion, and liberation from egoic tendencies.

    Just as Christians seek to become more like Christ—striving for kindness, humility, and love—Buddhists seek to become the best version of themselves, nurturing virtues such as compassion, patience, and wisdom. To be a Buddhist is to make a commitment to ethical living, to ensure that one’s actions bring benefit rather than harm to others. This mirrors the Christian commandment to “love thy neighbor as thyself.”

    At the heart of both traditions lies a dedication to improving one’s character and living in a way that reflects love and goodness. For Buddhists, this means confronting the mind directly—meeting thoughts and emotions with honesty and care. Instead of avoiding or denying the difficulties of life, Buddhists engage with their minds head-on, seeking to transform fear, anger, or selfishness into peace, kindness, and clarity. This inner work echoes the Christian call to examine one’s heart, repent, and strive for purity in thought and deed.

    In his teachings, Dilgo Khyentse Yangsi Rinpoche offers a striking and relatable metaphor that bridges ancient wisdom with modern technology. He likens the practice of Dharma to the way we sync our wireless earbuds with our phones. Just as the earbuds must be paired and in sync with the phone to receive the signal and work properly, our minds must be aligned with the Dharma to receive its benefits.

    This idea resonates with many spiritual traditions. For Christians, the same concept applies to our relationship with the Holy Spirit or with Christ’s teachings. God is always present within us and around us, but if we are distracted by anger, impatience, or worldly concerns, we lose that vital connection. Simply believing in Jesus’ sacrifice isn’t enough if we are not living in sync with his teachings. By aligning our hearts and minds with Christ’s message of love, forgiveness, and humility, we can fully experience the divine presence and live in harmony with God’s will.

    Far from being a pagan religion, Buddhism is, at its core, a path of deep moral reflection and inner peace. Like Christianity, it calls for a transformation of the heart—one that aligns us with love, compassion, and a life of service. While the outward expressions of these paths may look different, the goal is the same: to become more loving, wise, and true to the divine nature that exists within each of us.

    For Christians who might feel uncertain about Buddhism, it can be helpful to remember that the values of both traditions are not in conflict but in harmony. Whether we call this journey “walking with Christ” or “following the Dharma,” both paths seek the same destination—a life lived with integrity, compassion, and love for others.     A Journey Into the Infinite: The Call to Awaken to Our True Nature

    There is a voice that calls from deep within, faint yet steady, whispering to you through the silence of your heart: “The kingdom of God is within you.” You hear it in the stillness of the dawn, in the quiet moments when the world falls away. This voice is not far from you—it is not hidden in the heavens nor buried beneath the earth. It lives in the very breath you take, in the still center of your being, inviting you to “Be still and know that I am God.”

    How often we search outside ourselves, looking for the divine in places far from our own hearts. But God, the essence of all that is, has always been nearer than we can imagine. “God is the center of my soul,” wrote St. John of the Cross, and in that hidden center, as we approach the divine, we find that it expands within us, like an infinite wellspring of love and truth. And what is this love? As St. Teresa of Avila tells us, “It is love alone that gives worth to all things.”

    You, too, are the bearer of this love, this infinite truth that resides within the deepest chambers of your soul. “At the center of our being is a point of nothingness,” Thomas Merton reminds us, untouched by the noise of the world, pure and sacred, a place where you and the divine are one. In that sacred space, the distractions of life fall away, and we see ourselves as we truly are—not bound by illusion or time, but free, radiant, and eternal.

    Just as this sacred center resides within each of us, the mystics of many traditions remind us that the divine is not something that can be grasped by the mind alone. “The infinite is concealed from all the living,” say the mystics of Kabbalah. It is not something to be dissected, understood, or named. It can only be known through the soul’s journey into the unknown, through the deep, unnameable mystery of existence. It is the same mystery that “wherever you turn, there is the face of God.” The divine pervades all things, from the rising sun to the faces of strangers on the street, from the endless stars to the quiet rustling of leaves in the wind.

    In this profound unity, “man is a microcosm of the universe,” as David Bohm said. What we are, what we become, reflects the very nature of the cosmos itself. We are not separate; we are threads in the vast fabric of existence, each one of us a clue to the whole, each one a reflection of the infinite. “The Supreme Reality is beyond both the unmanifest and the manifest,” the Bhagavad-Gita tells us. It is the eternal and all-pervading essence of life, the unnamable source from which we arise and to which we will one day return.

    To recognize this truth is to realize, as Ramana Maharshi said, that “Your own Self-Realization is the greatest service you can render the world.” Only through the shedding of the ego, the dissolution of the false self, can we see the formless reality of who we truly are—nameless, timeless, and infinite. This formless reality is the space between thoughts, the silence in which everything arises and fades—eternal, yet present within every moment, like the quiet breath of the universe itself. “There is only one truth—God,” Swami Sivananda wrote, reminding us that everything else, all the fleeting shadows of the world, are but temporary.

    This realization of our true nature, this casting off of the little self, allows us to “recognize yourself as the vast Spirit,” in the words of Swami Paramahansa Yogananda. Beyond all limitations of form and thought, we are the boundless Spirit, free and ever-expansive. What is this freedom but the awakening to the truth of what has always been? The Buddha tells us, “What we think, we become.” Our thoughts shape our world, but beyond thought lies the ultimate realization of unity—of the one truth that binds all.

    We are not separate. We have never been. “We are here to awaken from the illusion of our separateness,” Thich Nhat Hanh gently reminds us. Our divisions, our dualities, are but veils that obscure the deeper truth of our oneness. Beyond the illusions of duality—right and wrong, self and other—lies a greater reality. As Rumi said, “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing, there is a field. I’ll meet you there.” In that field, where duality dissolves, we awaken to the truth of who we really are—expressions of the infinite, woven together in the fabric of existence.

    This journey into the infinite is not a process of adding to ourselves, but of shedding the illusions that have kept us from recognizing the divine within. It is a return to the essence of our being, where we find, as Lao Tzu so profoundly reminds us, “The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao.” The eternal truth, the infinite source, cannot be grasped by the mind; it can only be realized in the stillness of the heart.

    In this awakening, we are free. Free from the illusions of separation, free to live in the truth of our unity with all that is. As we return to this realization, we find, as St. John of the Cross said, “To reach satisfaction in all, desire its possession in nothing.” The journey is one of surrender, of letting go of all that is not real, to rest in the infinite, eternal love that is our true nature.

    This is the call that has always been with us, whispering through the silence of our hearts. It is not just a call—it is the very essence of life, the truth that lies at the core of all existence, waiting for us to embrace it. To awaken to the infinite is to recognize ourselves as the vast, boundless Spirit, and to live in the truth of our oneness with all that exists.

As we delve into its rich narrative, it’s easy to get caught up in the details of battles, relationships, and divine interventions. However, the essence of the Ramayana can be distilled into three simple yet profound lines, attributed to the Buddha:

    Be good.
    Do good.
    Purify your mind.

    Though these lines originate from the Buddhist tradition, they encapsulate the core teachings of the Ramayana and many other spiritual paths. These principles are not confined to one tradition alone; they are echoed in the teachings of Jesus Christ, who emphasized love, compassion, and inner purity as the path to spiritual fulfillment. Let’s explore how these simple instructions align with the lessons that Rama’s journey imparts, and how they resonate with the wisdom found in Christianity.

    Be Good

    At its heart, the Ramayana is a story about the importance of living a righteous life. Rama, as the embodiment of dharma (righteousness), consistently chooses the path of virtue, even when it leads to personal hardship. His unwavering commitment to goodness, whether in his role as a son, husband, or king, serves as a model for us all. Similarly, Jesus taught, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God” (Matthew 5:8). To “be good” means to cultivate a character that is honest, kind, and just, following the path of love and integrity, regardless of the challenges we face.

    Do Good

    Righteous intentions must be matched by righteous actions. Throughout the Ramayana, Rama’s life is marked by deeds that reflect his inner goodness. He honors his father’s promise, protects the innocent, and fights against injustice. Jesus, too, emphasized the importance of action, teaching that “whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them” (Matthew 7:12). The Ramayana teaches us that our actions in the world—no matter how small—have the power to shape not only our own lives but the lives of others. “Doing good” is about translating our inner virtues into outward actions that contribute to the welfare of all beings, just as Jesus modeled through his life of service and compassion.

    Purify Your Mind

    The true journey of the Ramayana is as much internal as it is external. Rama’s equanimity, his ability to remain calm and detached in the face of joy and sorrow, reflects the importance of mental purity. Jesus also spoke of the need for inner transformation, saying, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light” (Matthew 6:22). Both teachings invite us to cleanse our minds of negative emotions like greed, anger, and delusion. In doing so, we can attain clarity, wisdom, and inner peace. To “purify your mind” is to embark on the path of self-mastery, where the ultimate victory is over our own inner obstacles.

    Here, the “eye” can be understood not only as our physical sight but also as a metaphor for the “I”—our inner self and perception. If our inner vision—the way we perceive ourselves and the world—is good, then our entire being will be filled with the light of love and truth. Both teachings invite us to protect our minds from the influence of negative emotions like greed, anger, and delusion. In doing so, we can attain clarity, wisdom, and inner peace. To “purify your mind” is to embark on the path of self-mastery, where the ultimate victory is over our own inner obstacles and perceptions.

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and the Days of Awe invite us all—regardless of background or faith—to pause and reflect on the power of renewal. These days ask us to consider not only our relationship with the divine but also with one another, encouraging us to move beyond blame and finger-pointing toward a place of mutual understanding and healing.

    While rooted in Jewish tradition, the themes of Rosh Hashanah resonate universally. This is a time to recognize that our actions impact those around us, and it offers us the opportunity to choose a different path: one of compassion and forgiveness. In today’s divided world, the call to forgive, to seek peace, and to foster harmony feels more urgent than ever.

    A Universal Practice of Loving-Kindness

    Though this practice has its roots in many spiritual traditions, the desire for peace, compassion, and loving-kindness is not confined to any one faith or belief system. Across the world, differences arise not only in religion but in political ideologies, governance, and cultural values. In our time, conflicts over how societies should be organized and governed—whether democratic, republican, socialist, communist, capitalist, or authoritarian—further divide us.     Across religious, political, and ideological divides, there is a shared teaching: to extend love and compassion to all beings.

       •   Judaism: The Torah teaches, “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Leviticus 19:18), reminding us that love and compassion are central to how we live in community with others.
       •   Christianity: Jesus invites us to love beyond boundaries, “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44), challenging us to extend love even where it seems most difficult.
       •   Islam: The Qur’an speaks of God’s mercy, “And My Mercy encompasses all things” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:156), a reminder of the boundless compassion that we are called to reflect in our own lives.
       •   Buddhism: The Buddha teaches, “Radiate boundless love towards the entire world, above, below, and across, unhindered, without ill will, without enmity” (Karaniya Metta Sutta), inviting us to extend loving-kindness to all beings without exception.
       •   Hinduism: In the Bhagavad Gita, the concept of Ahimsa—non-violence—is central, “The one who has no ill will towards any being, who is friendly and compassionate, free from possessiveness and ego, even-minded in pain and pleasure, and forgiving, is dear to me” (Bhagavad Gita 12:13).

    Even those who do not identify with any faith—agnostics and atheists—can find meaning in the universal human longing for peace, harmony, and goodwill. The practice of Metta, or loving-kindness, invites us to step into this shared human experience, transcending borders, belief systems, and divisions. It calls us to cultivate compassion for ourselves and others, regardless of differences.

    Whether grounded in faith or humanism, the call to compassion and loving-kindness transcends all belief systems and ideologies. It is a reflection of our shared humanity, a truth that we all long for peace, healing, and connection.

  • Transforming the Suffering of ME/CFS into a Path of Healing

    For those of us living with post-viral myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), the experience of life often feels like moving through a landscape filled with unseen obstacles. There is the fatigue—so heavy, so relentless—that it can feel like a weight we will never shake. There are the moments when even the simplest tasks become insurmountable, and the pain becomes a constant companion, whispering in the background of every day.

    When I first encountered the teaching “Transforming Suffering and Happiness into Enlightenment” by Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima, it felt like someone had gently opened a door I hadn’t known existed. At the time, I was entrenched in my own struggle—fighting the fatigue, resisting the pain, angry at the injustice of it all. I didn’t see it then, but my resistance, my frustration, and my desperate need for things to be different were only making me sicker. Each day felt like another battle against my body, and it was exhausting in every sense of the word.

    The teaching introduced me to an entirely different way of relating to my experience. It was an invitation, not to fight against my suffering, but to sit with it, to gently turn toward it with a kind of curiosity. At first, the idea seemed absurd—how could I welcome something that was robbing me of so much? But as I read further, I began to understand that the more I resisted, the more I labeled my suffering as the enemy, the stronger it became. Everything around me had started to feel like an enemy—my body, the illness, even the world itself.

    The first time I truly absorbed the idea that suffering, like anything else, grows stronger with the attention we give it, it was a revelation. I started to realize that I had been feeding my suffering through my resistance. In a way, I was making myself worse by constantly pushing against the reality of what I was experiencing. This was the first eye-opener: that my own mind was contributing to the intensity of my suffering.

    I remember vividly when I decided to start putting this teaching into practice. I had signed up for a meditation class, feeling both hopeful and uncertain, and around that time, I also came across Tony Bernhardt’s book How to Be Sick. Little by little, I began to change how I approached the fatigue and pain. It didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it felt like planting seeds in the darkest soil—there were days when nothing seemed to grow, and I wondered if this new approach would ever bear fruit. But gradually, something did begin to shift.

    The more I learned to observe my suffering without immediately pushing it away, the more space I created around it. It wasn’t that the fatigue disappeared—far from it—but my relationship to it began to change. Instead of seeing every wave of exhaustion as something to fight, I started to meet it with a kind of quiet acceptance. This didn’t mean I liked it, but I stopped resisting it quite so fiercely. In time, the constant anger and frustration began to soften.

    As I practiced more, something else began to emerge—equanimity. I began to realize that the less I resisted both the suffering and the rare moments of joy, the steadier I felt inside. Over the years, my confidence in my ability to face difficulties has grown. There’s a quiet knowing now, a calmness that wasn’t there before, that when challenges arise, I can meet them without being completely swept away.

    Of course, this is still a work in progress, and I expect it will be for the rest of my life. Some days are harder than others, but the difference is that I no longer see the hard days as failures. They are simply part of the ebb and flow. And in learning to embrace both the suffering and the moments of peace, I’ve discovered a kind of strength that doesn’t come from fighting but from surrendering—surrendering to the reality of my experience without letting it define me.

The strict prohibition against idol worship in Judaism was not merely a rejection of other gods but a rejection of the immoral behaviors and dangerous practices associated with them.

    The Hindu Context: Righteous Deities and the Dharma

    In contrast, the religious environment of ancient India, where Hinduism flourished, presented a very different picture. The gods and goddesses of the Hindu tradition were seen as embodiments of various aspects of the divine, each playing a role in upholding cosmic order—known as dharma.     For many of us, the longest journey is the shift from the ordinary mind to the heart, or from the restless fluctuations of thoughts (vrittis) to the calm, witnessing presence. The heart, in spiritual traditions such as Advaita Vedanta and Jewish mysticism, is often equated with the Divine. It’s not merely an emotional center but the seat of the Divine Presence within us—Atman as Brahman, or the individual self as one with the Absolute.

    As we begin to experience this shift, we realize that our external experiences—both positive and negative—are just reflections of the inner workings of our mind. The challenges, such as illness or life transitions, become opportunities to witness these reflections without being swept away by them. This movement from the mind to the heart is the foundation for a life of spiritual presence.

    Living Between Excitement and Calm

    One of the paradoxes on the spiritual path is living with dual awareness: experiencing the emotional fluctuations of excitement, frustration, or joy while simultaneously witnessing them from a place of calm and neutrality.     A major theme in this spiritual journey is trust—trust in the Divine, trust in ourselves, and trust in the process. After years of doubt and uncertainty, we may begin to experience a deep sense of confidence and trust in life’s unfolding. Even when life presents us with difficult or unexpected challenges, such as illness or the need to move from a long-held refuge, trust allows us to remain grounded in the witness.

    This trust doesn’t mean we stop facing difficulties, but rather that we learn to see them as part of the greater unfolding of our spiritual path.
